How to Blend Hair Extensions with Short Hair

So you’ve had long hair for a while and can’t wait to change it up. You debate and you decide, and then change your mind all over again. Then one day, it finally happens. You gather the courage to finally go to the salon and have your hair chopped off!

Whew! Good riddance! You LOVE your new look!

You wake up the next morning and look into the mirror. Slowly but surely, a sense of sadness starts to creep in. And there you have it. You miss you old hair and you want it back!

Yep, we’ve all been there.

So, what can you do about it? Hair extensions, of course!

Blending in hair extensions with short hair can be quite tricky, especially with clip-ins. However, with a few tricks up your sleeve, you’ll be able to perfect the look in no time!

Mixing and Matching Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are great for adding a bit of color to your hair without actually going in for a balayage or ombre. This becomes tenfold easier if you have short hair since you already have a base tone to work with. Choose two sets of different but complementary colors and blend them in using the following technique to create a perfect, natural look!

The Modus Operandi

To get started, brush all your hair out and ensure that there are no tangles. Gently brush out your extensions as well before placing them in.

Step 1: Sectioning Out Your Hair

Begin by sectioning out most of your hair so that only a little of it is left at the bottom and pin it up. Next, back comb and twist the lower section and secure it with bobby pins to make the base for your extensions. If your hair is generally quite silky, secure the back-combed base by spraying some hair spray as you go along.

Step 2: Layering the Colors

Start with the darker color and secure it as the bottom most layers on your base. For a balayage look, the lighter colors should be left out towards the top and ends of your hair. Secure the lighter colored hair extensions on top of the darker color.

Keep doing this by releasing the upper section that you tied up, little by little until your hair is blended in seamlessly with the extensions. To add more grip to your natural hair, keep back combing it as you go along.

Step 3: Framing the Face

Once you reach the widest portion of your head, in line with your eyebrows, take the lighter shaded clips and adjust them to the length you would like for your front layers. This can get a bit tricky, so be careful to slash away the length from the wefts one inch at a time! Or better yet, have a professional hair stylist take care of it for you.

Step 4: Go Back To Step 2

Continue layering the wefts from darker to lighter, making sure to cover as much of your natural hair as possible. To save some time, curl your extensions beforehand so that you can see how well they blend in with the texture of your natural hair.

Finish off the layering process by adding individual wefts wherever you feel there is more need for length or volume.

Step 5: Tease The Hair Near The Crown

By doing this, you will be able to keep your extensions in place without risking the clips showing. Finish the look by curling your hair to give the effect of a seamless transition. Give extra attention to the pieces of natural hair around the extensions, as they can really make or break the look!
